2020 Year in Review for Cully's Junk & Removal Services

The business started slowly in March 2020 with the junk removal and bin rentals, then suddenly the Pandemic hit and everything shut down. We were still getting calls but decided to sit it out even though we were deemed essential until we had time to assess the situation. At the end of April we opened back up with strict safety protocols in place, masks, hand sanitizer, distancing and making sure clients were not in rooms or the houses when we cleaned them out. We also made sure that windows were open for better airflow when in properties for longer periods.

In May things really heated up because everybody was at home doing reno’s and clearing spaces etc. Junk volume doubled from the previous year and the bin rentals were also seeing an increase – work was really hectic. As the Summer approached calls for landscaping were coming in quick and scheduling became an issue, working late and over the weekend became the norm to get the projects finished. The landscaping team worked back to back jobs from back yard rebuilds, sod laying, building driveways and block patios. The team certainly got fit over the Summer.

As usual once the Fall hit and the landscaping came to a stop the junk removal and bins went crazy again with everybody wanting to get things done before the Winter. We worked right through till the end of November with the better weather.

All in 2020 was very distributive but one of the best years Cully’s has seen so far. We continued to contribute back to the community lowering prices where we could and sometimes offering our services for free to help people out due to the circumstances around Covid. We found even in trying times the people of Lethbridge were very positive with a great attitude – we are so lucky to be working in such a great community as Lethbridge. As Winter approaches the team can now have a nice rest as we gently tick over in time to start all over again at the beginning of March 2021.

2019 Year in Review for Cully's Junk & Removal Services

Spring of 2019 started very strong, we did a lot of residential junk removal and bin rentals.  We purchased another 2 black 16-yard bins (dumpsters) because of the demand.  Keeping on top of the maintenance schedule was a top priority so all the equipment was serviced, and safety checked with certification.  Late Spring Cully’s Junk and Removal Services got voted the NO1 junk company in Lethbridge for 2019 by THREEBEST RATED, a point scoring system that rates your business on service, access, website information and reviews – a welcomed vote of confidence.

We noticed a drop in demand for waste removal at the start of the summer as the economy stalled, so we decided to diversify a little and teamed up with Ladybug Arborist as she liked all the cleanup jobs we did for her business and she started giving us landscaping work - anything from laying sod to block and decorative concrete slab designs.  Also teaming up with Charles Jahnke Bobcat Operator for the heavier commercial earth removal - redesigning garden areas, driveways and boulevards.  As Fall came, we saw an increase in the demand for waste removal again and the team switched modes and worked flat out with both the junk trailer and bins to keep our customers happy.

Recycling continued to be very important to the business, more and more residential and commercial clients are wanting items recycled ethically or upcycled.  We were seeing lots of cardboard, furniture, electrical items, paints and oils.  Our metal recycling loads doubled, and we took hundreds of fridges and freezers to our metal recycling partners.  Donations of unwanted items to charity shops such as garden items, kitchenware and furniture saw us keep more and more items out of the landfill and in tern upcycle and make available to others unwanted goods.    

Being versatile was the key to 2019, we found off the back of the waste removal there’s lots of add on work.  To stay competitive in a changing market and to be profitable you have to embrace change.  The team have welcomed the rotating roles which bring new learning opportunities and increase knowledge and skillset.  Being adaptable and teaming up with great partners will only see Cully’s Junk and Removal Services thrive in 2020.
